Everest Base Camp — Travel Tips

Smart tips for a safer, smoother trek

Complete Travel Tips

Keep it simple: go slow, stay warm, drink water, and listen to your body.

🗓️ Best time to trek
  • Spring (Mar–May): stable weather, rhododendron season, busy trails
  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): clearest views, coolest nights, peak season
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): very cold, fewer trekkers, possible snow blocks
  • Monsoon (Jun–Aug): cloudy, rain lower down, flight delays more likely
⛰️ Acclimatization & altitude safety
  • Walk slow: “bistari bistari” is the best tip for EBC.
  • Add at least 2 acclimatization days (commonly Namche + Dingboche).
  • Sleep low when possible; avoid rushing your itinerary.
  • If you feel unwell, tell your guide/friends early and rest.

If symptoms get worse at altitude, the safest choice is usually to descend.

🎒 Packing essentials
  • Warm layers: base layer, fleece, down jacket, shell jacket
  • Good shoes + blister care: trekking boots, socks, tape
  • Sun protection: sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm
  • Headlamp, water bottle, basic first-aid, wet wipes
  • Power: power bank + cables (charging is paid in many teahouses)
💧 Water, food, and stomach safety
  • Drink enough water daily (especially higher up).
  • Use boiled water / refill stations with purification (tablets/filter).
  • Eat simple, hot meals—Dal Bhat is a solid option on trek.
  • Avoid too much alcohol during the trek (especially at altitude).
💰 Money & payments
  • Carry cash (NPR) — ATMs are mainly around Lukla/Namche and may not always work.
  • Keep small notes for tea, charging, showers, and tips.
  • Budget extra for flight delays (food + nights in KTM/Ramechhap).
📶 Network, Wi-Fi & electricity
  • Wi-Fi is paid in many villages and can be slow.
  • Charging usually costs extra—save battery with airplane mode.
  • Download offline maps before you fly to Lukla.
✈️ Flights & delay planning
  • Morning flights are usually more reliable than late flights.
  • Keep 1–2 buffer days in your plan for weather delays.
  • Pack essentials in your daypack in case your duffel is delayed.
🧑‍🦯 Guide/porter tips
  • A guide helps with navigation, pace, and safety decisions.
  • If using a porter, keep your bag weight reasonable and pack neatly.
  • Agree on daily rate and what’s included before starting the trek.
🧼 Respect & responsible trekking
  • Carry your trash out when possible; avoid single-use plastics.
  • Ask before photographing locals.
  • Keep noise low in lodges—people sleep early.
